BLACK SABBATH - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973)

so, i was at my neighbourhood public library earlier this week and came upon this album. right below par the bat, i’ll say, i’ve never really bewitched a liking to black sabbath (i do own paranoid), but in all fairness i not in the least positively gave them a inadvertent either. i decided to check it outlying. i listened to it three times. the beginning two, pretty much right in a row, and then a third a combine hours later, louder as well. what can i say, i am impressed. a previous reviewer wrote something along the lines of there’s more to black sabbath then what meets the inspect i couldn’t assent to more. i never questioned the musicianship of this band, but never respected them either, until now. sabbra cadabra is the highlight of the album, with honorable mentions to who are you and a personal favorite spiral architect. i can’t believe this album came out in 73′, and it’s their 5th work! they were so at the of their time. its almost mind blowing that they were cranking out this heavy stuff so first. i’m really going to put some effort into checking out more of a black sabbath’s albums. by kix threatening sabbath music online: recommended progarchives.com worldwide prog rock stores more about black sabbath at progarchives.com

Palin coverage in the heartland

out in the heartland, much of the account coverage of republican presidential seeker john mccain’s running comrade sarah palin has focused on how she has thrilled evangelical voters.

In other words — surprise, surprise — the focus is on the horse race and not on the substance. Since the pick was announced, there has been some coverage of the substance of Palin’s beliefs and career, but a lot of it still focuses on the process that was involved in selecting Palin.

In the heartland and in Ohio specifically, newspapers have had predictable coverage. The Columbus Dispatch ran an article focusing on how Palin could draw evangelicals (and women) to vote for the Republicans in November.

Ohio Right to Life Executive Director Mike Gonidakis praised McCain’s choice, saying Palin will energize social conservatives: “It’s a definite game-changer, not only for the pro-life movement, but for the (GOP) base here in Ohio.”

But Emily’s List, which raises money for female Democratic candidates, said Palin won’t hurt Obama among women.

That description of Emily’s List should have noted that the group supports only candidates who are also support abortion rights. However, that almost goes without saying.

Some articles have focused on local Democratic Party responses to the Palin pick. Others have mentioned local Republicans enthusiasm. The enthusiasm typically focuses on evangelical voters. Other articles don’t mention religious issues at all.

Since there is no real practical way for me to canvas all of the papers around the country, please send us local articles that discuss whether or not GOP officials believe Palin will help bring out more voters that otherwise might have stayed home. My hometown newspaper, The Indianapolis Star, wrote in an article Tuesday that Hoosier delegates at the Republican Convention were excited about Palin. The only suggestion of religious issues is the mention that Palin is pro-life and the fact her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is pregnant.

The Dayton Daily News writes little on Palin’s personal views, but repeats the often repeated story about Palin’s pro-life views and the way those views have influenced her personal actions:

Palin, 44, already has made history. She is both the first woman and the youngest person to hold the Alaska governorship. She is the first woman on a Republican presidential ticket, and if elected, would be the first female vice president. She is pro-life, and was celebrated in the anti-abortion movement when she refused to consider an abortion after learning Trig was likely to have Down syndrome.

People have marveled at how well she has juggled her public and private life as a mother of five children, including one with special needs.

Much more could be said about Palin’s personal religious views and how they influence her public policies. From what I have seen most local newspapers have either relied heavily on wire services or other major newspaper’s coverage of the Palin pick. Part of the challenge is that Palin’s religious views are hardly typical, at least compared to what reporters are used to seeing in national politicians, and remain somewhat of a mystery.

I am hoping there are some local heartland-oriented newspapers out there with the resources to cover how the Palin pick is seen in their local community. And maybe they will mention religious issues.

Bob Barr: Voters say let him debate

Most voters - 55 percent - say that Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr should be included in the fall series of presidential debates, Zogby Interactive has found.

Not quite as many - 45 percent - say independent candidate Ralph Nader should be included.

Among political independents, sentiment for a third point of view on stage in the nationally televised debates runs strong: 69 percent say Barr, a former Republican congressman from Georgia, should share the stage with Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

Democrats and Republicans are less willing to share the stage: 39 percent of the Democrats surveyed told Zogby that Barr should be included, and 41 percent of the Republicans surveyed said so.

The younger the voter, the more the support for Barr’s voice.

The Barr campaign professes itself “heartened acheter levitra to learn that most voters don’t buy into the ’spoiler’ argument being espoused by partisan talking heads.” That’s how Russell Verney, campaign manager for Barr and former campaign manager for H. Ross Perot, puts it:

“People want real change and they know that they are not going to get it from a Republican or a Democrat,” Verney says. “America’s only hope for change is by allowing more competition in the political process and that means opening the debates to any candidate who can meet the ballot access criteria.”

In 1992, Verney notes, Perot was running at just 7 percent in the national viagra polls when he was allowed to participate in the presidential debates. He garnered 19 percent of the vote that year.

For admission to the debate stage, the Commission on Presidential Debates requires that candidates get their names on “enough state ballots to have at least a mathematical chance of securing an Electoral College majority in the 2008 general election.” It also requires that a candidate “have a level of support of at least 15 percent of the national electorate as determined by five selected national public opinion polling organizations.”

Barr, a member of Congress from 1995 to 2003, served on the Judiciary Committee. He had been United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, appointed by President Reagan. He since has left the Republican Party, and has secured the Libertarian nomination.

But as things stand today, the debates don’t take Libertarians. Barr won’t be appearing at the presidential debates on Sept. 26 at the Univeristy of Mississippi in Oxford, on Oct. 7 at Belmont University in Nashville or on Oct. 15 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
